What is a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)?

Also called Medical Office Secretary, the role of a CMAA is to keep healthcare front offices running efficiently and effectively. This role includes operating computer systems, managing patient registration and scheduling, and maintaining patient and other practice-specific information.

CMAAs are critical in keeping healthcare offices running smoothly, and also play an important role in the patient experience. Tasks vary by setting, but may include:

  • Reviewing and answering practice correspondence

  • Operating computer systems to accomplish office tasks

  • Answering calls and scheduling appointments

  • Greeting patients and updating electronic medical records

  • Updating and maintaining patient and other practice-specific information

  • Coordinating operation reports such as time and attendance

  • Operating office software and equipment

 

CMAA Certification Requirements

The CMAA course includes 40 hours of required training with NHA registration and exam. This includes PersonAbility(TM) training to enhance front office communication skills. There are two externship track options including 12 hours on-the-job training at any healthcare facility or 18 hours training in EPIC Healthcare, the most widely used practice management system in Indiana.

Requirements:

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent, to participate in the CMAA Certification Program.

  • Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to meet each of the essential function/technical standards required to work as a successful CMAA.

  • The applicant will need to successfully complete the training hours and successfully pass the NHA Medical Administrative Assistant certification exam.

  • Applicants will be required to pass a criminal background check.

  • Three forms of valid identification are required.
